Word lookup & review

Meet a new word. Understand it. Remember it.

You do not need to leave a page every time you meet a new word. ThomLingo brings word lookup into your reading and lets you choose which words to save for later review.

How to use it

  1. Open ThomLingo in Chrome and choose your source and target languages.
  2. Select a word to look it up, or turn on hover translation.
  3. Read the result and save the word if you want to review it. Sign in to sync.
  4. Open your vocabulary notebook on the website to review saved words.

Look up words while you read

Select a word or phrase, then press and release Option on macOS or Alt on Windows, or click the Tomi icon that appears. You can also enable hover translation in the extension for quick word lookup.

Keep the language pair you chose

A saved entry keeps the original word and your selected translation. For example, an English-to-Chinese lookup saves the Chinese meaning. Changing the interface language does not replace saved translations.

Listen and learn in context

Lookup results include meanings and supporting information when available, such as pronunciation, phonetics or an example. Choose the words that matter to you; hovering over a word does not automatically save it.

Review by recalling first

Your vocabulary notebook syncs with your account on the website. Start a review, try to recall the meaning before revealing the card, and rate how well you remembered. Spaced review schedules future encounters with saved words.

Before you get started

Does every lookup save a word?

No. Only words you explicitly save are added to your notebook.

Can I save different language pairs?

Yes. Saved entries keep their source language, target language and corresponding translation for the languages supported by the feature.

Does the extension work on every page?

Chrome restricts extensions on some pages, including browser settings and the Chrome Web Store. Word selection also depends on the page containing selectable text.
